Picking The Right Exterior Color

Author: Crystal Bailey

Choosing the right exterior paint colors for your home can be a daunting task, especially with our climate.  The weather can be unpredictable and the lighting can change dramatically throughout the day, so it’s easy for a gorgeous color to become a bit dreary as the cloudy days drudge on. Let's explore some tips for picking the perfect exterior paint colors for your  home, and how lighting can affect the final look of your chosen colors.

consider the climate

Before choosing a color, it's important to consider the climate in your area. We’re all about our rainy weather, so it's important to choose colors that will look good even on cloudy days. Consider choosing warmer colors that will brighten up your home even on gloomy days, or opt for a color with gray undertones that will blend in well with the cloudy skies.

check the surroundings

Another important factor to consider when choosing exterior paint colors is the surrounding landscape. If you live in a wooded area, for example, you may want to choose a color that will complement the natural greens and browns of the trees. On the other hand, if you live in an urban area, you may want to choose a color that will stand out and make your home pop. Be sure to check with your HOA before selecting paint colors for your exterior to be sure you are picking an approved color.

test colors in different lighting

One of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing exterior paint colors is how the colors will look in different lighting conditions. Lighting can drastically affect the way a color looks, so it's important to test your colors in different lighting conditions before making a final decision. You can do this by painting small test swatches on different sides of your home and observing how the colors look throughout the day. It's also a good idea to observe how the colors look in both natural and artificial lighting. Lighting can bring out shades of blue, green, red and even pink in paint colors.  Make sure you test to avoid the surprise of a pink house!!

consider the architecture of your home

The architecture of your home can also play a big role in choosing the right exterior paint colors. Certain colors may complement the style of your home better than others. For example, if you have a classic Victorian-style home, you may want to choose colors that are more traditional and elegant, such as a deep red or navy blue. On the other hand, if you have a modern-style home, you may want to choose colors that are more bold and vibrant, such as a bright yellow, turquoise or my favorite, black!

don’t be afraid to get creative

Finally, don't be afraid to get creative when choosing exterior paint colors for your home. You can mix and match colors, experiment with different shades and tones, and even add a pop of color to your front door or shutters. The possibilities are endless, so don't be afraid to have fun with it!

Choosing the perfect exterior paint colors for your home requires careful consideration of the climate, surroundings, architecture, and lighting conditions. By following these tips and taking your time to choose the right colors, you can create a beautiful and inviting home that you'll be proud to show off to your friends and family. Remember, when you are feeling overwhelmed by all of the choices it's a great idea to ask a professional for help :) Happy painting!!
